Sacramental Preparation

Receiving the Sacraments is a vital expression of who we are as followers of Christ. A Sacrament is an outward sign, instituted by Christ, through which we receive God’s grace. The Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are traditionally received during Year 3, although older children and adults may also receive these Sacraments each year.
The faith formation of children begins at home. Parents are the first teachers of their children in faith and have the privilege and responsibility of supporting their child’s preparation. School, parish and families work together to help children grow in faith through prayer, learning, worship and service.
As part of preparation for Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, children and families are asked to engage fully with the following:
- Regular attendance at Sunday Mass
The Eucharist is at the heart of our faith. Attending Mass helps children understand the importance of gathering as a parish community to listen to God’s Word, pray together and celebrate the Eucharist. - Completion of weekly reflections
Children complete reflections in their preparation booklet to help them think more deeply about the Gospel, ask questions, share their thoughts and grow in understanding. - Building a relationship with the parish priest
Families are encouraged to make themselves known to the parish priest so that he can accompany them pastorally during this important stage of their child’s faith journey. - Active participation in parish life
Children are encouraged to take part in parish life through simple acts of service, such as welcoming parishioners, offering hymn books, assisting with altar serving, reading, music or helping with refreshments where appropriate. These small acts help children understand that receiving Holy Communion is lived out through kindness, generosity and service.
Families may also be asked to attend parent sessions, complete home activities with their child, provide a copy of their child’s Baptismal certificate if they were not baptised at Our Lady Star of the Sea, and identify a sponsor or trusted adult who will support, guide and pray for their child during and beyond the time of preparation.
Once the preparation requirements have been fulfilled, families may contact the parish priest through the parish office to request a date for their child’s First Holy Communion. Children will usually receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, also known as First Forgiveness, on the Saturday, followed by First Holy Communion on the Sunday. Where possible, families may request the same weekend so that children can celebrate together as a group.
